GLOBAL EDUCATION
There are many buzzwords in education, and it seems we are always awaiting the "next big thing" that will solve all of our educational challenges. However, global education is not simply a new trend - it is a relevant, engaging, and rigorous philosophy for viewing both the purposes and outcomes of education. I believe that global education has the power to transform teachers, students, schools, and our entire educational paradigm.
Global education is a framework for helping students hone discipline-specific skills while making interdisciplinary connections and work on real-world issues, all with the goal of becoming more informed and engaged citizens of the world. Global competence means the capacity and disposition to understand and act on issues of global significance. Global education promotes deep engagement, focuses on clear global issues (which often have local impacts), and gives students opportunities for performances of global competence. Teachers in this process are guides and mentors, helping students as they engage in meaningful activities that require critical thinking, written and oral communication, discussion, teamwork, initiative, problem-solving skills, and imagination.
Four interacting elements of global education are:
*Investigating the World (Students investigate the world beyond their immediate environment.)
*Recognizing Perspectives (Students recognize their own perspectives and others.)
*Communicating Ideas (Students communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences.)
*Taking Action (Students translate their ideas into appropriate actions to improve conditions.)
